The team were missing a few (Matt O'Neill, Matt O'Hanlon, Harvey Hancox) but there a few back from injury (Jake Woods, Max Bradley, and skipper Mike Webster).
Port Sunlight kicked off, and probably wished they hadn't. Port Sunlight's defence were put to the test and found wanting as after a couple of drives and passes Dean Clarke scored within two minutes, Jack Jones converting.
It took another ten minutes for the second. Ben Sparke used the wind to good effect kicking deep in Sunlight's 22. Within 5 metres a couple of drives and then a Jake Woods dummy enabled him to score, again Jack Jones converted. Two minutes later and Max Bradley added another try. Hoylake broke out and as the ball moved through several hands it was Max who crossed the line. For some reason Jack Jones failed to convert!
It took another ten minutes before the bonus point score came. Another breakout saw winger, Cameron Penny, scorch deep into Sunlight's half and as their full back came in for the tackle Cameron passed to the supporting Joe Lavin to score a good try. Jack Jones converted. Just before half time Jake Woods scored his second. From a 5 metre scrum he gathered, went to the blindside and scored with ease, Jack Jones converting and brought the score to a 33 – 0 lead.
So Hoylake opened the second half having made a few changes. Finlay Smith replaced Dean Clarke on the back row and Maddox Rainbow went onto the wing, replacing Cameron Penny.
As was the case for the game's kick off, within a few minutes Hoylake extended their lead. Ben Sparke took a quick penalty within Sunlight's 22 and trotted over unscathed. Jack Jones failed to convert.
At this point the sun dropped below the clouds, created a dullness that Hoylake emulated and rejuvenated Port Sunlight. Ben Sparke, having scored, decided to have a rest and Dom Watters came on and went to full back, Joe Lavin moving to scrum half. Hoylake decided to keep the game within the forwards, the tighter game allowing Sunlight's defence to gain in confidence and gain and retain possession, and creating the odd opening. Hoylake weren't helped when they lost Matt Ross and Max Bradley with nasty looking ankle injuries. Nevertheless, they allowed the game to drift away. On the half hour the trade mark front of the line-out move was deployed within Sunlight's 22 and Jake Woods secured his hat trick and Jack Jones converting with a great kick from far out wide.
The referee blew his whistle again, this time bringing the game to an end and a 45 – 0 Hoylake win which keeps them top of the table 4 points ahead of New Brighton who had beaten Thornton Cleveleys.
