Hoylake 25
Glossop 3
A welcome return to winning ways for Hoylake after their disappointing result and performance to a young Warrington side the previous week.
This encounter was typically physical as is always expected against Glossop, however, the hosts ground out a well-earned victory. The highlight of which was the 10 minutes spent with 14 men, defending their own line against a Glossop onslaught and coming away without their line being breached, thanks to several turnovers, last ditch tackles and a try saver from Ian Griffiths, who held a Glossop player up over the line.
The score at half time was 10-3 thanks to a Tom Selby try, who gathered a Matt O'Hanlon cross field grubber and dummied his way to the line, partly making up for his shaky opening 20 minutes! Also to 5 points from the boot of bad tempered fly half, James McLaughlin.
The second try was scored by in form centre, Mike Kearney, midway through the second half after a nice offload from the returning veteran and co-centre, Richard Young. Another Mclaughlin penalty followed before a last minute try from Chris Whiteley, which he converted himself, rounded off proceedings.
Although not a spectacularly flowing performance by Hoylake, the physicality that they showed compared to the previous week's display was pleasing to Coach Gareth John.
This week, Hoylake have another home game. This time against Winnington Park. Captain, Matt O'Neill said, 'We are expecting another tough game against Winnington Park who will undoubtedly have a point to prove against us. We’re having to reshuffle the pack again slightly, but we have another strong side out. We just need to sharpen up at half-back and hopefully we can match the physicality that was showed against Glossop.'
