The proverbial game of two halves today - and even though there was some controversy about the score I had it down as a win to us, there seemed to be a bit of gloominess from the boys afterwards. In many ways it’s good that there was some disappointment at the things we didn’t quite get right. However there were loads of positives to take out of today; bags of grit and determination, some great tackling technique and exposure to a 15 a side game for the first time against a streetwise team who’ve been playing that format for years. We scored some well worked tries too.
There’s no need for despondency. If we’d carried on as we started the score line would have been more flattering but we’d have learned nothing about the game or where we’re at as a team.
We need to think ahead more - getting into a defensive line more quickly, holding onto the ball more tightly and working it back to our teammates when we go into contact, rather than offering opposition easy chances to turn us over, making our rucks harder and our ball slow.
So let’s focus on the good tries we scored (through Jonny Young, Eddie Miller and Andy Young - fantastic offload from Zac Saverimutto) and how we can build on a solid performance at training this week.
It was really hard to pick a man of the match today, The conversions were crucial in the end so well done to Henry (100% record for the season ?) for his laid-back tap overs… Hooker Luke Lappin was superb in the first half making almost every breakdown, as were the back three with their tackling and positional play, fielding the oppositions kicks to make sure they go no success from that aspect of the game. The boys in the back row, Isaac Saunders, Joe Couttie and Seb Davies stuck at it all day and worked hard ultimately denying Mold several times as they tried to force us over in the corner. Man of the match was Seb, coming back from a nasty injury last week and getting back into it with power and ferocity.
Parkonians at home next week. Always a physical test and one I’m sure we’ll be ready for.
